Ballarat 2015

What and Where

The Australian National Stereo Convention is the premier event for stereo photographers and enthusiasts in Australia. The convention is conducted over three days every two years and includes workshops, excursions, world-class 3D shows and plenty of time and opportunities for picking up everything from the basic fundamentals to the latest techniques in stereo photography.

The 24th National Stereo Convention will be held between 1-3 May 2015 at Sovereign Park Motel in Ballarat, Victoria. The York Conference Room is an excellent room, large enough for us to set up some permanent static displays, while leaving our projection setup and seating intact for the duration of the convention.

Ballarat is one of most famous for the uprising, during the gold rush in the middle of the 19th century, at The Eureka Stockade, and many people consider this to have been the birthplace of democracy in Australia.

The majestic streets and imposing architecture leave one in little doubt that Ballarat was, in its heyday, one of Australia's wealthiest cities.

One of the attractions in Ballarat is the array of shops along the main streets. Clothes shops, craft shops and book shops make for great browsing as do a range of museums.

The surrounding areas are also interesting. There are numerous small towns which came into being during the gold rush.

Getting there

By Car

Ballarat is around 110km by road from Melbourne and about 960 km from Sydney. The roads are good all the way with many kilometres of freeway and bypass but speed cameras abound.

By Train

The V/Line train leaves Melbourne (Southern Cross station) frequently and takes an hour and a quarter to get to Ballarat.

The XPT leaves Sydney (Central station) twice a day and reaches Melbourne in just under 11 hours. The train from Melbourne to Ballarat then takes another hour and a quarter.

There are many, many places to stay in Ballarat. We have yet to make any arrangements but that will change soon. The Sovereign Park offers 4-star accommodation with discounts to convention attendees, and some of the nearby motels include:

  • Comfort Inn Main Lead
  • Eureka Lodge Motel
  • Big4 Ballarat Goldfields Holiday Park
